Accessibility

Making sure your message gets across

Accessibility is about opening up your website to as wide an audience as possible. Just as your mother said, every person is unique, and so we build websites which can be used by people regardless of the technical specifications of their computer or their physical disabilities.

Where is the accessible version? You're looking at it...

We thought that rather than just listening to us prattle on about accessibility, you'd prefer to see it in action. So we've prepared a list of things which you can do yourself to see how this website adapts to different situations.

  1. When we design and build websites, we're very conscious of the wide variety of ways that a visitor may be viewing the finished product. We make sure that the website fits snugly even on resolutions as low as 800x600, and we can even build special instructions for smaller screens, such as those on a PDA. Try resizing the window of your browser to see where the minimum width has been set.
  2. Our designs are built to flex according to a user's font size preference as well. Try changing the font size in your browser menu to see how the website adapts. How do we fare against other websites?
  3. Use 'Print Preview' to see how we've encoded special instructions for printers – no more websites hanging off the edge of the paper. When a page goes to print, we drop off any images which might use up a lot of ink and we alter our text colours to bring out a strong contrast.
  4. Our website has also been tested with screen readers and assistive technologies which vocalise the text content of a page. Screen readers are also useful if you're a bit lonely.
  5. Where clever scripting has been used, it serves only to enhance a user's experience. If you've got scripting switched on, then you'll be able to take advantage of a few more fancy interactive elements. But if it's switched off, then you'll still be able to read and view exactly the same text content as everybody else. If you want to toggle scripting on or off, then you need to find the right switch in your browser menu.
  6. Finally, we've created a set of access keys to enable you to jump about between pages with a keyboard shortcut. Here is the list of access keys.

This brief checklist is certainly not the limit of the features we've programmed into this website; if you're not sure if your current website is up to scratch, then we'd be happy to go through a more advanced checklist with you. Send us a wee message to find out more.
